Men can go natural too! Review of Every Man Jack deodorant

Isn’t it about time I dedicated a post to men for a change? I think so. Apart from changing my own routines for the better and letting go of all toxic cosmetics, I am fortunate enough to also have a man that didn’t laugh at me when I did. Even better, he too changed his habits, and although he’s a bit less fanatic than me, almost all of his cosmetics are replaced for better alternatives now. He just made it a case of honour of emptying everything before tossing it out, even if that hand soap contains SUPER toxic Triclosan… Yep, he’s still emptying that bottle, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will run out soon. I’m also trying really hard to not just throw it out myself sooner.

Although my motives are kind-hearted, not wanting my loved ones to be exposed to all of these horrid ingredients that are found everywhere, I do know I have to be careful not to come across to preachy. I don’t want to scare anyone away by forcing my lifestyle on them. It’s just hard because I want only the best for my family.

Anyway, I found that as long as the alternatives for my boyfriends regular products were equally good – or in some cases even better – he didn’t mind the change. He is open-minded about it, and I love that. The only thing is that I have to search the alternatives for him. But if that means our home is becoming cleared from as much toxins as possible, I’m happy to spend hours online searching for the perfect affordable item.

Perhaps this is a tip for those of you ladies whose men are more reluctant to trying natural cosmetics: just do the job yourself. If you search for great alternatives that look and perform just like the “normal” stuff, your men might not be bothered so much by the change. Maybe they won’t even notice!

One of the first things I ordered for my boyfriend, was deodorant. I knew this was tricky, because if it wouldn’t do a great job from the first time, it was going to start some serious trust-issues regarding natural cosmetics for sure. After comparing different options, Every Man Jack’s deodorant was the one that I bought. Here’s our (I can’t really say ‘mine’, can I? But I sure do have an opinion about it too!) experience with it.

The review: Every Man Jack - Cedarwood deodorant

Every Man Jack Cedarwood natural deodorant
Where to buy? I've bought it here on iHerb.

Price: 5.49 $ for 3.0 oz (85 g)

Ingredients: Aqua/water/eau, propanediol, aloe barbadensis leaf juice*, sodium stearate, witch hazel distillate, gossypium herbaceum (cotton) extract, calendula extract*, myrrh gum extract, alpine lichen extract, grapefruit seed extract, chamomile extract*, salvia sclarea (clary sage) oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) oil, juniperus virginiana wood extract, fragrance/parfum.
*certified organic

Not tested on animals. No animal byproducts.

According to Every Man Jack 'Lichen extract and rosemary are natural antibacterial agents that help control odor causing bacteria. Cotton extract and witch hazel absorb wetness. Essential oils of rosemary and sage refresh. Certified organic aloe vera soothes sensitive skin.'

The packaging

We both like the fact this is a deodorant stick. We immediately ruled out all spray bottles, as I can't handle overwhelming odors being spread through the entire bathroom and most of the apartment too. My boyfriend himself also likes a stick deodorant better, and he prefers a stick over a roller so that choice was easily made.
You do have to be a bit careful when the stick is almost done, as it has fallen off its holder about two times (in about four months use). It's not a disaster however, as it can be easily put back together and you're good to go again.

The holder itself looks fine. I like the fact it has manly colours, so our men have nothing to be ashamed of when pulling this out in public. No girly feel and not too much of an alternative style. I think this deodorant has a very decent size too, it's quite large actually. And that for a very good price. Impressed so far!

It comes safely capped!

The smell

With deodorant, the smell is, next to performance, obviously the main focus. I can reassure you that this cedarwood version smells DIVINE. Seriously, I like it more than any other men’s deodorant I've ever smelled. It doesn't smell flowery or herbal, which you might expect initially when going natural in deodorant. It smells, well, manly. I generally hate chemical and obvious smells, as they give me migraines, but this stuff I can tolerate very well. The fact that it's in a stick form keeps it from getting too overwhelming too of course.

My boyfriend also likes the smell, but he is not raving about it as I am, or what did you expect? He's just happy I've managed to find something that isn't too different from his old regular deodorant.

This deodorant also comes in the scent 'Signature Mint'. We haven't tested this so can’t comment on that one.

The performance

A lot of armpit sniffing went into this test, which was kind of weird, but how else could you possibly decide if a deodorant works? Our conclusion is the following. Although this deodorant isn't able to block all body odors, it keeps my boyfriend fresh throughout the day. On moments he has been sweating a lot, when you sniff right in the armpit (sorry guys), you certainly can smell this deodorant isn't invincible. But it's not like sitting next to him you go all "Where the hell is that smell coming from??".
According to me, this deodorant has the same performance as any of his old regular deodorants. According to him, on really rough days, you can smell the, ehrm, difference (I personally don’t notice the difference). But then again, a quick shower will solve that issue. I don’t think with any regular deodorant you would work hard all day and sweat a lot, and just go to a nice dinner party after. You would freshen up, and it’s the same with this natural deodorant.

Ahh, the smell :-)

Conclusion

The fact that my boyfriend didn't feel the need to try any other natural deodorant than this one, and also didn’t go back to his old one says enough. In four months time, all we did was repurchase Every Man Jack's Cedarwood again. It lasts a while: I would say probably between one or two months depending on how much of it you use. The smell is very good, and it performs as good (or almost as good, depending on who you want to believe ;-)) as his last deodorant (which was a Sanex roller). It didn't let him down in his every day work situation, a job interview or very hot temperatures during heat waves over here. That must mean something, right?

With all of this for such a great price, I say bring 'em on!

  1. Good for you for getting your boyfriend interested in using a more natural brand of deodorant, and good for him for agreeing (time to dump the toxic brands, even if still half full...those chemicals are accumulating and concentrating in your body...literally, you are marinating in a chemical cocktail!)
More women need to get their men on board.
    Great post!

  5. Hey Sofie,

Nice review, as a guy I absolutely agree with everything mentioned here. And I also totally agree with the premise: ladies, just buy this for your guy and he will start using it as long as he doesn't hate it. We're not averse to change, we just don't go out of our way to find it.

And if you ask us, the answer will be "eh, whatever", because for most guys it isn't that high on our priority list.

  6. Using the snadalwood right now and I work light labour / office job in a Oil plant. I am normally in tshirt and jean at my desk or with coveralls on in the plant (some very warm areas 35C(130F)+).

It does smell Nice I found it is crazy weak and only rellay an option for people who dont sweat at all or will be taking it easy.... very easy. I understand how your Boyfriend feels about how on rougher days he can notice the differance. I Go by the rule that If I can notice the differance my self then its not good enough lol. It is a very nice product and I use other products made by them as well but I think this will fall short for far to many men out there who need a lil mor oomph so-to-say. Great reivew though! I may have to give the other scents a try.

  7. Aluminum is actually used in store-bought deodorants AND antiperspirants in order to stop sweating. However, aluminum typically achieves the particular goal coming from clogging your current pores with the underarms, in which may lead to be able to ingrown hairs AS WELL AS rashes. http://www.mordocrosswords.com/2015/12/deodorant-options.html
